Barret is one of the few of the group of heroes in Final Fantasy VII that was determined to save the planet from the beginning. He headed the terrorist/underground resistance (it depends how you look at his actions) group AVALANCHE. He first meets Cloud when he joins him on a mission to destroy Sector 1 Reactor. They fight often, but as Barret gets to trust Cloud more, they become better friends. He is fueled to stay with the group by his hatred for Shinra, which destroyed Sector 7 to kill him, and instead killed his teammates, his daughter, and his friend, Dyne, whose life was ruined by Shinra. He is tough on the outside, he is compassionate when his friends are in trouble, and when Marlene, his daughter, is involved. He also has good leadership abilities, even though he gives his leadership up to Cloud, and there is no one stronger in a fight, and especially someone as determined to save the planet as Barret.
