Red XIII is one of the interesting characters of Final Fantasy VII. We first meet him at Shinra HQ, where he is being tested on by Hojo. When you help free him, he joins your team until you reach his homeland, Cosmo Canyon. He seems very mature, and is at first a mystery to the team. Red XIII is not even his real name, just a name that Hojo gave him.
When you reach Cosmo Canyon, most of the questions about Red XIII begin to clear up. You find his real name to be Nanaki, and that his tribe has a long lifespan, so he is the equivalent of a 16-year-old human. Also at Cosmo Canyon is Bugenhagen, his grandfather, who shows Cloud and the team why the earth is dying, and is of great assistance to the team. Red XIII decides to join the team permanently after discovering that his father, who he thought was a coward, was turned to stone protecting Cosmo Canyon, and he decided to leave to protect the planet, and maybe follow in the proud tradition of his tribe and his father, Seto.
