Sephiroth is the diabolical villain of Final Fantasy VII, planning to end the world for his own gain. He was not always a villain, though. He was once SOLDIER'S top ranking officer. "Even among the elite troops of SOLDIER, Sephiroth is known to be the best" (from the FF VII instruction manual). His downward slide to villainy is on a routine trip to Nibel, to check out some malfunctions at the Nibel Mako Reactor, a trip that Cloud is present on (to find more about Cloud's involvement in this crucial trip, check his profile). As Sephiroth and his group make it to the reactor, Sephiroth sees all the Mako creatures that Hojo, head scientist of Shinra is creating. Sephiroth starts to wonder about his shadowy past, which he does not know much about. After spending day and night in the basement library of the Shinra Mansion, reading volume after volume of Shinra's record. He then finds that he was like those creatures, injected with Mako and JENOVA cells. Since he had JENOVA cells in his body (she was like a Cetra, see her profile for a more detailled explanation), he considered himself an Ancient, that the humans had destroyed the Cetra and taken their land from them, so he and his mother, JENOVA, should take the planet back. He then headed toward the Nibel Reactor, destroying everything in his site, burning down Nibel, almost killing Tifa, killing another SOLDIER, Zack, and freeing his mother, JENOVA. Cloud, a low ranking Shinra troop, sees his friend Tifa injured, and goes after Sephiroth, stabbing him, and then throwing him down the reactor. It was reported he died in battle, but he survived.

As I have told you, Sephiroth's mother, in his eyes, was JENOVA, but his biological parents were Lucrecia and Professor Hojo, who had him to use in scientific experiments.

Sephiroth first reappears after killing President Shinra, because he wanted to reach the Promised Land. As Cloud and the others later find out at the Temple of the Ancients, Sephiroth wants to use the Black Materia to summon Meteor, to create an injury to the planet. He would be at the center of this huge injury, and as the planet energy swelled to the injury, he would absorb the power, making him a God-like creature. Sephiroth gets the materia, and finds of Aeris' plans to release Holy. He kills her, but not before she is able to release the power of Holy. He then loses the materia to Cloud, but is not worried. He heads towards the Promised Land, past Glacier Mountain. As Cloud and the group get there, Sephiroth is able to control Cloud, and Cloud hands over the Black Materia. This happens, because as we find out, Cloud is a failed Sephiroth clone. Sephiroth releases Meteor, and is able to hold back the power of Holy.

After Shinra destroys the protective dome around the Promised Land, Cloud and the others form their attack. As they kill Sephiroth in three forms, they release the power of Holy, and save the planet.
