Yuffie, in the beginning, is "sneaky, arrogant, and selfish" (from the FF VII instruction manual), one of the secret characters of the game. The first time that you meet her, if you answer her questions wrong, she steals your gil! Yuffie, though, is great in a fight, from a long line of ninja, the daughter of the great Godo.
You cannot trust Yuffie in the early stages of the game. When you visit Yuffie's homeland of Wutai, she greets you by stealing your materia. She steals them for her homeland, which once had a lot of materia, and was a flourishing town. After a war, all of the materia was taken, and Wutai turned into a tourist town. After you save Yuffie from Don Corneo, the sleazy owner of the Honey Bee Inn, you can trust her more. She trusts you, and you can definitely rely on her in the fight to save the planet.
One of the most important events to happen to Yuffie is her journey through the Pagoda of the Five Gods. She battles through the five floors, beating the gods of her land, and her father, Godo. In beating her father, she proves herself mature, strong, and ready for the final battle.
